Comparing the Effectiveness of Vocabulary Instruction Methods

For years, there has been a debate in education over the best approach to teaching vocabulary. Some educators claim that teaching words in isolation is the most effective method for students to retain the words, but other educators declare that learning the words in context gains the best results. For our research, we are alternating presenting vocabulary lessons in both approaches. We will be analyzing quiz scores, as well as noting the number of times students use the new words in their writing and in class discussion, in order to see if there is a noticeable difference in the effectiveness of the two methods. At the end of our research, we hope to find one approach clearly yielding higher quiz scores and increased usage of the new words.
