Is Journaling Effective in the High School English Classroom?

This presentation represents the preliminary results of my MAE action research project over journaling in the classroom. The goal was to see what happens when students were asked to keep journals over assigned reading. The research was based on data from three junior English classes from a small, rural school studying a play in the Spring 2009 semester. Classes were asked to alternately journal over two of the four acts in this play. I analyzed the results of journaling as affecting class participation and reading comprehension between the journaling and non-journaling classes for each act. Data was kept on class participation (quantity and quality), and quiz and test grades, and other factors.
