Helpful Feedback and the Writing Workshop
Sarah E. Maddox♦
Dr. Wendy Miner and Dr. Paul L. Yoder, Faculty Mentors

The writing workshop can be a great tool for helping student writers envision readers. According to Peter Elbow’s seminal Writing Without Teachers, "the teacherless class [his version of the writing workshop] comes as close as possible to taking you out of the dark about how your words are experienced…making it easier to produce meaningful words on paper" (125). My MAE Action Research Project was inspired by the question "How is the quality of feedback between student writers influenced by my teaching strategies?" For this project, I studied one feature of the writing workshop—location of feedback—to determine its impact on the nature of peer response. I wondered if students who wrote feedback directly on peers' papers would respond to different kinds of writing issues than those who wrote feedback as a paragraph on a separate sheet. My presentation will focus on methodology, data analysis, and implications for the classroom.
