Data Mining the Transcendentals
Jeffery L. Pierce
Dr. Robert Matthews, Faculty Mentor
This presentation will discuss a method for machine-generation of numerical approximations of transcendental numbers to arbitrary precision. Included is an explanation of one technique for representing floating point numbers in the Python programming language and a sampling of algorithms useful for the arithmetic manipulation of such numbers. In addition, numerical methods for the data synthesis of two familiar transcendental numbers, e and pi, will be analyzed. Challenges in this area of research are disclosed as well.
