Imaging a Standing Sound Wave With Holographic Interferometry

Holographic interferometry is the process of superposing a holographic image with a real image identical except for a spatial shift on the order of a wavelength of light to produce an interference pattern. The nature of that pattern reveals information about the spatial shift allowing visualization of the vibrational shape of a structure or of a sound field. This can be done statically in time-average holography, or dynamically in real-time holography. Experimental techniques to reliably produce this effect using both methods were developed for our laboratory. Attempts to apply these methods to a standing wave of sound in a column of air have thus far been unsuccessful for reasons that will be discussed.
