Clashing Worlds: The Incorporation of the Warao Tribe into Non-indigenous Venezuelan Society
Kathryn M. Bollman
Dr. Jane Sung, Faculty Mentor
The Warao tribe resides in the Orinoco River Delta on the eastern border of Venezuela and Guyana. For generations they have lived in relative solitude, maintaining their culture, clothing, and a self-sufficient economic system. In recent years many Warao have moved toward non-indigenous Venezuelan establishments and/or have begun to incorporate components of non-indigenous technology and culture into their lives. This has resulted in some successes, and other failures. We discuss observations from a 6-week period living around and among the Warao both in non-indigenous and indigenous settings, as well as interviews of people living in the region with particular emphasis on economic barriers and behaviors.
