Environment, Oil Revenue, and Civil Society: A Case Study of the Niger Delta

Dr. Wolfgang Hoescehele, Faculty Mentor
There exists an environmental and security crisis in the Niger Delta. Decades of irresponsible oil extraction and political apathy has led to this crisis. This paper will highlight the environmental and political issues facing the Niger Delta, and study how the civil society has mobilized as a result of this political and environmental degradation. The paper argues that a marginalized civil society will move towards violence as a method of having their voices heard. One of the major complaints of the civil society is that the current distribution of oil revenue is unjust. The current revenue distribution formula used by the Nigerian government is challenged, and alternative revenue distribution mechanisms are suggested.
