The present study examined the effects of adult attachment styles and relationship status on depressive symptoms. Participants (N = 81) filled out self-report measures of attachment styles, symptoms of depression, and questions about relationship status, satisfaction, length, and commitment level. The results were analyzed using stepwise multiple regression elimination taking into account Variance Inflation Factors in order to control for multicollinearity. The results confirmed previous findings that fearful attachment predicted depression in individuals. However, fearful attachment predicted depressive symptoms in dating participants but not single participants. Additionally, fearful attachment predicted lower relationship satisfaction levels in dating individuals.
