Cutting Out a Space: The Construction of an Imaginary World

By cutting into paper to reveal structures once indistinguishable from the material itself, I cut into reality to open an entrance into a world which lies between reality and imagination. The white paper suggests an undefined space in which anything can take place. Delirious and ever-transforming, a world is exposed in which logic is sequenced like dreams. The cut-outs encompass and transform inhospitable surroundings, acting as a shield against outside dangers. In turn, their presence also transforms these unwelcoming places into playful environments. Within, an arena is created for the performance of idiosyncratic ceremony and ritual ruled solely by the whims of imagination. Documented through photography and video, these solitary events are carried out in abandoned buildings and forests. Like the white paper, these spaces can be taken over by anything that chooses to occupy them. These ambiguous spaces become the framework for the creation of a world outside of our own.
