Roots to Branches: Ricardo Flores Magon and the Development of Leftist Ideology in the Mexican Revolution

Ricardo Flores Magon influenced the Anarchist movement and the Mexican Revolution through his writings and actions. The Magonista cause promoted equality, land reform and fundamental labor reform. Flores Magon's willingness to work alongside other parties and interests while preserving his own set the blueprint for Communist party politics in Mexico during the 1930s; his call for "tierra y libertad" inspired the Zapatistas to the south and his party's willingness to use military force in Baja California and the US-Mexico border lived on in the more leftist groups that existed throughout the nation. Mexican anarchism in the early twentieth century helped guide leftist action and ideologies in the Mexican Revolution through the 1930s and beyond.
