Inventory Of Native Flora In Dancing Rabbit EcoVillage
Plants are the foundation of many ecosystems; they provide homes and food for insects, animals, and other plants. Without understanding the organisms present in wild areas, it is impossible to advocate for their protection or understand their role in the local ecosystem. Floristic inventories provide a means for future research in the protection, use, and observation of plants. Previous research conducted in the Dancing Rabbit EcoVillage studied the relationship between the biodiversity and abundance of native prairie grasses and native nesting birds. The present field survey aims to expand upon this research in order to qualitatively compare the biodiversity of native plants today to 15 years ago. Flora will be identified and voucher specimens will be collected if not locally endangered. Collected data will be analyzed to determine if the species present today vary significantly from previous data and to identify what factors may be affecting floral communities.
