Machine Learning's Effects on Discrimination

Machine learning allows computers to accomplish tasks once thought impossible for them, such as labelling the contents of an image or diagnosing cancer. The field is ripe with new development and is being put to work in a variety of industries. This research examines the darker side of these algorithms: how well they learn from human biases. Throughout this paper, the roots of the problem are discussed from both a societal and an algorithmic standpoint. The causes of algorithmic discrimination, its effects on society, and possible solutions are examined.
