This case study reports on observed conceptualizations of disability when introducing the perspective of Disabilities Studies to a diverse group of 14 to 16 year old students at a transitional urban/suburban Midwestern school. Students were introduced to the basic principles of the social model approach to understanding disability and explored excerpts from a young adult novel with a Disabilities Studies framework. Data includes student artifacts, the teacher journal, and conferences with students. Analysis will be applied through a constructivist paradigm to explore how students understanding of disability has been impacted by the end of the unit.
