Understanding the Yang-Mills Problem
The Yang-Mills problem is one of the best-known unanswered questions in mathematics, and it is incredibly relevant to physics. Quantum Field Theory, the intersection of special relativity and quantum mechanics, does not have a mathematical foundation, and the Yang-Mills problem asks us to find that foundation. However, the question statement is difficult to understand, due to the high level of mathematics required to comprehend what is being posed. In this presentation, we will semi-rigorously develop the mathematics required to understand the Yang-Mills problem statement, and by the end of the presentation you should have a clear idea of what the Yang-Mills problem is asking for us to find. Afterwards, we will discuss the state of the problem, and analyze some of the progress that has been made in the past 20 years in regards to solving it.
