Going Green in the Organic Laboratory
Marjorie A. Hoffman
Dr. Anne E. Moody, Faculty Mentor

Green chemistry incorporates numerous strategies to synthesize useful molecules in more environmentally friendly ways. Incorporation of such principles in the organic teaching lab is one of the goals of this project. To draw the interest of organic students, the ultimate synthetic target is a β-diketone that resembles the pleasant-smelling rose and violet ketones. The synthesis begins with a solvent-free Claisen condensation to synthesize the first major intermediate, ethyl acetoacetate, from ethyl acetate. This substance is fully characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy. The next step is to create a procedure to synthesize ethyl-β-cyclogeranate from geranyl acetate. A full retro-synthetic analysis will be presented.
