Exploring the Unique Stresses of DoDDS Students Through Writer's Notebooks

Many prominent language arts specialists have explored the idea of “writer’s notebooks”. Students write in these notebooks on a consistent basis, using them from anything to reflection on literature, creative writing, or personal journaling. During my teaching internship, I applied the use of writer’s notebooks to a specific population, that of DoDDS (Department of Defense Dependent’s Schools) students. These students, largely the children of American servicemen/women stationed abroad, experience stresses unique to their living situation, such as frequent relocations, residence in a foreign country, and lengthy deployment of a parent. Through my utilization of writer’s notebooks in my high school language arts classroom, I discovered that many students felt daily personal writing had a positive effect on their mental and emotional well-being.
