Wildlife Protection or Human Survival in the Sundarbans in Amitav Ghosh's The Hungry Tide
Amitav Ghosh’s novel, The Hungry Tide (2004), focuses on the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest in the Ganges delta in the Bay of Bengal, spanning the coastline from West Bengal in India to Bangladesh. Juxtaposing environmental conservation and the survival of the destitute islanders, the novel presents the complicated and complex conflict between tiger protection and the impoverished people in the Sundarbans. This paper will examine how Ghosh illustrates the struggle to balance environmental conservation with human survival.
