Irene Ryan - Wonder of the World and Julius Caesar

Aubrey L. Gogel
Dr. Jonathan Wehmeyer, Faculty Mentor

The Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship is a scholarship competition that occurs at the regional and national level through the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF). Irene Ryan was an American actress and comedian best known for her work on The Beverly Hillbillies. The scholarship was created in her name to honor and recognize outstanding student performers. This past January, I competed in the Irene Ryans against 300 people from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota at the 57th Region 5 KCACTF. In order to compete, I was required to prepare a four minute package, consisting of one monologue and one scene. I read through many plays and settled on Portia's monologue from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and a scene from David Lindsay-Abaire's Wonder of the World. From there, I spent copious amounts of time memorizing and collaborating with my theatre professors to perfect my pieces.
