Effects of BMI on Balance: BTrackS Limit of Stability Protocol
Balance is essential for injury prevention and quality of life. Physical characteristics, such as body mass index (BMI), may be associated with balance. This study utilizes the BTrackS Limits of Stability (LOS) protocol to investigate a potential relationship between increased BMI (kg • m-2) and balance. 20 participants (15 females, 5 males: age: 43.5±13.36 yrs, BMI: 26.0±4.1 kg • m-2), had their LOS (cm) assessed by standing on the BTrackS force plate and shifting their weight from their toes to heels and from side to side for 60 seconds. A linear regression test revealed a moderate effect (R²=0.37) of BMI on LOS. This suggests increased BMI may be positively correlated with increased LOS. For further consideration, a larger sample size is needed.
