“The Archangel”: Addressing Societal Issues Through Fantasy Storytelling

Madeline Mertz♦
Dr. James D'Agostino, Faculty Mentor

I propose a reading from my fantasy short story “The Archangel” which follows a young hunter who learns the value of all lives, even when all lives are not valued by society. The story is the result of several workshop classes during my undergraduate studies at Truman State, and has undergone significant personal revision during my graduate studies. For my presentation, I propose a reading demonstrating the necessity of addressing societal issues through fiction and fantasy as well as the progression of my own writing in Truman’s creative writing program.
