Undergraduate Students’ Awareness of Maternal Mortality in the United States
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), maternal mortality disparities, or differences in the rates of maternal mortality among certain populations, are a particular concern (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/nchs_press_releases/2020/202001_MMR.htm). This study investigated the awareness of maternal mortality in the United States (U.S.) among undergraduate students from a variety of majors with a range of professional aspirations, both healthcare and non-healthcare related. Seventy-two undergraduate students from a medium-sized public, midwestern university participated in this study by completing an online survey. The survey included both demographic items, such as age, academic major, and professional aspirations, as well as questions regarding contributing factors to excess maternal mortality in the U.S. Data analysis was conducted to identify group differences in responses based on participant characteristics. These results will inform future development of maternal mortality educational materials for pre-health professional students that includes evidence-based recommendations for eliminating maternal mortality disparities in the U.S.
