Accommodations and Strategies Used by Rural Midwest Middle School Teachers for English Learners
Teaching methods and strategies have been studied widely to see what can help students understand and digest content in the classroom. However, the strategies used for English learners (ELs) in rural midwest school districts do not always provide the teachers with the right tools to accommodate these students. Previous research has been done on the best methods for teaching ELs. While the research is not extensive, it has shown that having an asset view of students while also providing them with a safe environment to learn is a major factor that contributes to student success. This study examined the strategies and methods used by teachers in a rural midwest school district for teaching their ELs. This study found that while the methods used by teachers were beneficial, what motivated the students were the attitudes and the teachers’ willingness to actively provide supplementary academic scaffolding.
