The Influence of Independent, Partnered, and Audio-Assisted Reading on Early Literacy Comprehension

Dr. Christohpher J. Maglio, Faculty Mentor

This study examines the impact of different reading formats on students' reading comprehension. Conducted over three weeks with twelve first-grade students, the research investigated whether reading independently, reading with a partner, and following along with an audio-assisted eBook influenced comprehension. In the first week, students read books silently or whispered to themselves. In the second week, they read aloud with a partner, taking turns reading each page. In the third week, they followed along with an eBook on their Chromebooks, where the text was read aloud to them. Each week, students were assessed based on the format of reading practiced, taking a pre-test on Monday and a post-test on Friday to measure possible improvements in comprehension. The results of this study provide insight into how varying reading approaches may affect comprehension in young readers.
