Failure is Not an Option: Stress Pride & Achievement Orientation
This research study explored how specific personality traits influence one’s perception of stress, while providing further validation data for the stress pride scale. The Stress Pride Scale (Judd, 2019) assesses students’ perceptions of stress as a marker of self-worth and success. Stress Pride scores were compared with scales measuring social insecurity, fear of failure, and achievement motivation. It was hypothesized there would be a positive correlation between stress pride and each of the respective scales. Hypotheses were partially supported. Stress pride was positively correlated with fear of failure and achievement motivation, but issues of scale reliability impacted results for the social insecurity scales. These results suggest that being afraid of failure and being more motivated to achieve is related to a higher likelihood of using stress as a marker of self-worth, and it is possible that stress and achievement are viewed as closely linked in the broader population.
