The Reality of 'Backyard' Poultry Production

Hunter L. Hobbs*, Sierrra J. Snyder, and Sydney E. Janiesch
Dr. Bob Johnson, Faculty Mentor

The trust placed in commercial poultry production is declining, making it more necessary to explore alternative production options. Reliance on grocery stores for meat has led to a disconnect between the reality of poultry production and its portrayal in the media. For this project, the feasibility of conducting ‘backyard’ poultry production was examined and broken into the following sections: Research, Husbandry, Processing, and Marketing. Our team researched the legality of ‘backyard’ production and found that producers with under a thousand chickens were exempt from USDA inspection. Production started with fifty-one chicks and ended with forty-three chickens processed for market. Using limited resources and experience, the goal of ethically producing poultry for local consumption became a reality.
