Connected Species Distribution Models: Plantago and Powdery Mildew
Plantago is a genus of flora that is incredibly common throughout Europe and North America. It can become host to a specific fungal infection called powdery mildew. Me and a team of researchers utilized community science observations of Plantago along with publicly available climate and environment data to create a geographic distribution model of both Plantago and powdery mildew. The Plantago model was used as an input variable for the powdery mildew model, mirroring their actual host-parasite relationship. This project explores two major concepts: how changes in climate affect extremely prolific plants like Plantago as well as utilizing a host model to model the distribution of a hosted species.
