Listener Perspectives of Emotional Intent with AI Generated Speech Output

Brooke Geary* and Tia Strege
Dr. Amy Teten, Faculty Mentor

The purpose of this research project is to determine if there is a difference in listeners' perspectives when Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used in an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device to convey the user's emotional intent compared to devices without this capability. 191 Truman undergraduate students were surveyed after watching one of two videos. One video showed an individual using an AAC device with AI capabilities to change the speech output. The other video showed an individual using an AAC device with no AI capabilities. Aside from this, the videos were identical. Collected data will be used to determine if the AI capabilities of the AAC devices changed the listeners' perspectives of the AAC user.
