Women's Participation in the Bangladesh War of Independence in Tahmima Anam's A Golden Age
Focusing on the months leading up to the creation of Bangladesh, Tahmima Anam’s groundbreaking novel, A Golden Age (2007), opens in Dhaka during the March 1971 Operation Searchlight which started the civil war. Through the depiction of Rehana Haque’s relationships with her daughter Maya and son Sohail, Anam highlights the ways in which politics and war create fissures in families. This paper will examine the ways in which A Golden Age illuminates the role of women as resistance fighters and supporters of the war effort.
