The Diary of a Young Girl: Exploring Craft

Madeline Mertz♦
Dr. Brian Heston, Faculty Mentor

Following the end of World War II, there were a number of testimonials which rose to fame detailing the experiences of Jewish Eurpeans prosecuted in concentration camps. However, Anne Frank’s story has grown to be arguably the most famous testimonial of its time, and the story itself does not even include Anne’s time in Bergen-Belsen. The paper will analyze Anne Frank's craft and how her literary voice contributes to how her story has been received by readers both when the book was first published and today.

Anne uses actual plot points that would be seen in a creative text in her diary entries, which may have been carefully crafted by her father, Otto Frank who selected which of Anne’s entries would be included in the diary. Her voice and craft moves are the reason that her diary has become such a popular testimonial of World War II.
