Student-Led Goal Setting and Its Influence On Low Achieving Math Students In 5th Grade
This study investigates how student-led meetings and goal setting can improve low achieving students’ math scores in a fifth grade classroom. Grounded in goal setting theory, the research examines the relationship between student goal-setting and performance, considering students’ motivation, effort, and external influences. A small sample of students were selected to implement goal setting to see if it influenced their math achievement while the rest did not receive explicit goal setting. The results revealed inconsistencies with some students demonstrating improvement while others showed little to no improvement. This suggests that additional external factors may impact the effectiveness of goal setting. These implications suggest that a more structured goal setting approach could be beneficial in the educational setting. The research highlights a need for further investigation in order to have a more comprehensive understanding of results, optimize implementation of goal setting, and improve student achievement.
