Money Fueled Education: The Effects That Low Socioeconomic Status Has on Education and Student Success

Ashton M. Stuber
Prof. Jeanne Harding and Ms. Beverly Peters, Faculty Mentors

The American education system has long been fueled by the success of its economy. This has generated a cycle that suggests that to be successful one must be educated, to be educated one must be financially stable, and to be financially stable one must be successful. Money being a key factor in educational success has called into question how socioeconomic status (SES) affects a child’s education. Low SES positively correlates with low literacy rates, low post-secondary education attainment rates, and increased likelihood of remaining within low SES. This research analysis looks to identify correlations between low SES and education, observe educational institutions remediating practices of problems caused by low SES, and identify why it is important to understand problems within education that stem from low SES. The research seeks to analyze this problem from a variety of disciplines that include but are not limited to sociology, psychology, economics, and education.
