A comparison of barriers to seeking mental health services among Missouri college students in 2022 and 2023
The purpose of this study is to describe the barriers to seeking mental health services among Missouri undergraduate college students. This study focused on the responses of Truman State University students and other Missouri college students who completed the Missouri Assessment of College Health Behavior (MACHB). The MACHB is conducted by Missouri Partners in Prevention every Spring on member campuses (n=26). The 2022 and 2023 MACHB data were compared to assess differences over time at both the state and local levels. Students reported experiencing mental health issues at a higher rate than they reported being diagnosed with a mental health condition. Over one-fourth of students on campus and in Missouri overall reported cost as a barrier to seeking help, and were concerned about the stigma surrounding mental health services. Truman students reported a higher rate of mental health conditions than Missouri students overall in both 2022 and 2023.
