The Forgotten Alto: History of the Clarinet's Middle Voice

Harper R. Golden♦
Dr. Jesse D. Krebs, Faculty Mentor

The clarinet section has a rich history including many unique variations of the instrument in different ranges. The middle voice, the alto clarinet, is one important member that has been overlooked in its development. Though there is some prevalence in its usage within ensemble settings, the alto is often forgotten due to both perceptions of the instrument and the presence of other voices with similar timbres. This presentation will detail the alto clarinet's development, from the beginnings of its creation to its usage in the modern day. In addition, significant repertoire for the instrument will be discussed, along with a short performance.
