The Use of Therapeutic Ultrasound to Treat Traumatic Myositis Ossificans
A 21 year old male football player from a Division II football team presented with traumatic myositis ossificans in his right biceps brachii long head. This condition reduced the patients ability to flex his arm and was painful throughout ROM. The ossification was imaged and measured using diagnostic ultrasound. Therapeutic ultrasound was used over the ossification for 6 consecutive weeks in hopes that it would decrease the size of the ossification. Every week, the ossification was measured using diagnostic ultrasound. This treatment was being compared to literature claiming it can take 6-18 months to resolve using physical therapy. After 6 weeks of intervention, the ossification had shrank significantly. The patient also reported better ROM and decreased pain.
