Assimilation & Accessibility Experiences of Mexican-American College Students
Access and assimilation for Latinx students in higher education has been a continuous issue that has recently been looked into over the past few years, however there is still a gap present. There is still little study for Latinx college students, specifically Mexican-American college students. Assimilation and acculturation have yet to be studied in relationship with its impact on undergraduate degree completion. A series of interviews with undergraduate students who identify as Mexican-American was conducted in order to answer the questions: What are the impacts of assimilation and acculturation on degree attainment for Mexican-American college students? What are some of the barriers and inequities Mexican-American students face in terms of undergraduate study? What role do family and cultural values play in higher education for Mexican-American college students? Ultimately this study found that family values and assumptions have an impact on how a student views higher education.
