Jars of Clay.... Transcending Religious Language
Mary F. Hamera
Dr. Bob Mielke, Faculty Mentor

Many Christian artists have encountered difficulty when trying to crossover into the mainstream music industry. This difficulty results from opposition by both the secular and Christian audiences as well as radio stations. Upon careful research it was found that Jars of Clay had perfect timing entering the music scene. This paper analyzes the history of contemporary Christian music, the causes for the opposition as well as the strategies employed by the Jars of Clay and their record label to ensure a successful crossover.
