Does the use of masks impact a Communication Disorder students’ ability to identify articulation errors?

Kiley Freesmeier * and Alyssa Ferry
Dr. Ilene Elmlinger, Faculty Mentor

The purpose of this project is to determine if masks make it more difficult to identify articulation errors in communication.  This research is important because standard healthcare practice includes the use of masks in speech therapy.  This study will examine if the masks make it more difficult for clinicians to identify speech errors.  The use of masks decreases visibility of the face, making visual feedback and modeling difficult when working with clients in need of speech and language services. When clients wear masks it becomes harder to tell specifically what the client is doing with their articulators and may be difficult to teach them the right way to produce a sound or word because the speech pathologist cannot see what they are doing when they speak.
