Knowledge of the health needs of Lewis County, Missouri is essential for effectively implementing health promotion programs to improve the health of local residents. The Regional Health Assessment Project (RHAP) survey was designed to measure respondents’ health needs to help solve endemic health concerns in northeast Missouri. A survey was mailed to a sample of registered voters during fall 2004, addressing the following areas: demographic information, community health concerns, and access to affordable health care. The data from returned surveys were sorted and evaluated for each county surveyed. Lewis County respondents indicated child abuse and dental problems were important health concerns; tobacco abuse and obesity were the health concerns not being adequately met; and prescription drugs and health insurance were not affordable in the community. These findings can be used by community health educators and others for targeting health education and promotion programs where they are most needed.
