Women in the UMC

Kelsie N. Mitchell
Dr. William Ashcraft, Faculty Mentor

The research is on the topic of female pastors within the Methodist church with a particular focus on the question- Why, if it has been allowed for nearly seventy years, are female pastors in this degree of a minority and oftentimes still not accepted as church leaders by congregants? The paper and presentation will look at a few possible answers to the question. This lack of widespread acceptance is caused by pressures from American society, individuals not having much exposure to female pastors, and the circulation of Biblical interpretations saying that a woman being a pastor should not be allowed. Then a few possible solutions or approaches to the issue will be explored. Looking to feminist theological rhetoric, targeting women when recruiting for ministry, and noting alternative Biblical interpretations will increase acceptance for female UMC pastors.
