An Evaluation of Native American Representation in American Films
Maria A. Leon
Dr. Brian Ott, Faculty Mentor

Native American representation is drastically low in the media. What representation there is, is rampant with stereotypes. Prior research has identified this issue in books and TV shows, and has focused on the effects of poor representation leading to drug use, alcoholism, and feeling unable to move past these labels. While research has been conducted there is still much to cover. I conducted a content analysis of ten films of various time periods, all of which having earned Academy Awards over the time span it has been active to analyze what stereotypes are represented and which ones are still prevalent today.
