Investigation into the Social Skills Improvement System's Inter-Rater Reliability Between Parents and Teachers
This investigation seeks to evaluate the inter-rater reliability of a commonly-used survey known as the Social Skills Improvement System (SSIS), specifically in evaluating the social skills of preschool children. Previous research has investigated the reliability and validity of the SSIS, comparing it to other social skills measures. Other research has evaluated differences between parent and teacher responses for different social skills measures. However, inter-rater reliability of specifically the SSIS in comparing parent and teacher responses has not been closely evaluated. The present study holds importance in determining whether future investigators, when using the SSIS, could just collect data from one of the two raters (parents or teachers), saving time and resources. Our investigation also shines light on a demographic that previous research on this topic does not amply address, specifically children living in rural areas and not yet in the K-12 system.
