Walden in the Oven
Julie B. Ferdman
Dr. Alanna Preussner, Faculty Mentor

In this creative piece, I approach Nature writing from the oven, drawing on the experiential tradition of many nature writers to create my own piece of nature writing. Much inspired by Thoreau’s Walden especially, this piece explores one facet of self-sufficiency – making one’s own bread – and the joy and fulfillment that can come of that process. Included is a discussion of the basic ingredients of bread and their purpose and significance to the bread making process, as well as their connections to other aspects of Nature and the infinite life cycles they are a part of. Heavily influenced by Thoreau, living simply and gleaning empowerment from the process of making bread are points that are emphasized. The treatment of the subject matter is extremely hands-on and based mostly in personal experience.
