Enhancing Educational Resources and Improving Community Awareness of Trees on Truman’s Campus: Pursuing Sustainability

Melina Matheney
Dr. Elisabeth A. Hooper, Faculty Mentor

Truman was designated a ‘Tree Campus’ by the National Arbor Foundation in 2004. Efforts have been underway to increase awareness of campus trees including the formation of a Tree Care Committee, development of a website with a digital map of campus trees, and creation of two campus Tree Walks. Each walk has a brochure with a map, tree names, and basic information about the trees. Also, each tree has a plaque with the tree’s scientific name and QR code linked to the website. While much has been done, the website and some associated educational materials need improvement. The main goal of this project was to increase awareness of trees on Truman’s campus and make information about the trees more accessible to the campus and Kirksville community. Specifically, webpages accessible through the QR codes were made more informative along with distribution of informational brochures for community outreach to better advertise these resources.
