Double-Saxophone: How to Write and Perform Works for One Musician Handling Two Instruments

Kyle D. Rieger♦
Dr. Xin Gao, Faculty Mentor

In the saxophone’s expanding classical repertoire, there are very few compositions that employ the extended technique of “double-saxophone”, in which a performer plays two horns at once. To explore this technique and its capacity for usage, excerpts from the currently unpremiered “Aulos & Lyre” will be performed, accompanied by an analysis of the work’s double-saxophone usage by the composer. Limitations of the technique, reasons for its usage, and its employment in other repertoire will also be explained to help performers and composers gain insight into how they might begin to interact with double-saxophone in their professions.
