Serving Native Americans: White and Native American Relations During the Oklahoman Great Depression

MaryClare C. Stoker
Dr. Sally West, Faculty Mentor

This presentation will use my genealogy lineage to uncover how Native Americans and whites interacted during the Great Depression. The narrative specifically focuses on the life of Claude Ladd, a restaurant owner in Oklahoma during the 1930s and how his interactions of hospitality and acceptance towards Native Americans appears to differ from the common historical narrative of the time. The research also further investigates the conditions of Native Americans in Oklahoma during the 1930s and how many assimilated into American culture as a way to survive the conditions of the Dust Bowl.
