Genres are used to give a reader context about a story, but what stimulates the creation of these genres? Carolyn Miller in her article Genre as Social Action, discusses how genre is a response to a societal need. on the other hand, in Graphs Maps Trees, Franco Moretti explores how genres are created by using a statistical approach to mapping out what genres have existed and for how long.In this presentation I will be using Moretti and Miller’s works, as well as rebuttals to their works to explore the genre of Ozark Noir, and how it was created.
