Football players differ in strength and relative body size based on their position.  The purpose of this study was to compare the difference in physical characteristics like height and weight, as well as, performance characteristics like strength between backs and linemen in college football.  Sixty-six players (41 backs and 25 linemen) preformed one-repetition maximums for bench press (BP) and squat (SQ).  Comparison of absolute strength in relation to position was conducted through One-way ANOVA Post hoc- Tukey test.  In each factor tested, the means for linemen were greater than those of the backs.  From the findings of the data for mean height, weight, bench and squat, there is a significant difference between linemen and backs with a p value of p<0.001 in all except for age. Data followed the typical conclusion that lineman’s have a greater strength than backs.
