Integrating 21st Century Literacies into the English Classroom for Student Engagement

Katie S. Lucarz♦
Dr. Summer Pennell, Faculty Mentor

I introduced a creative project during students' research unit. Students completed their research on a Google Slides document instead of on paper note cards and presented their research in a creative mind map format instead of writing a traditional essay. My research question was: How can implementing a new technology—e.g., the Canva website for creating mind maps as a visual format of a research project-- affect student learning? The first outcome of my research is that the creative technology did inspire most students (both those who struggled to stay engaged in class and those who were already engaged in class) to strengthen their written arguments which also lead to more engagement in class. The second outcome showed that several other students would have preferred to have the option to write the more traditional essay and engage with the creative format only after having written the information out first.
