Performance Hall Acoustics: Understanding Why We Enjoy Concerts
Performance halls are specifically designed so that the acoustics produce the optimal sound quality. The question is what are the acoustics and how does that help build a venue. The theory of acoustics provides an understanding of the influence that acoustic components such as sources, reflections, and paths have in constructing that specific optimal sound. Consequently, architecture directly shapes the performance hall environment by manipulating acoustics to create the best sound quality. In this presentation we examine three aspects: the physics of the acoustic components, the architectural materials and designs of performance halls, and case studies that show how both acoustics and architecture merge harmoniously in famous performance halls.
