Emma: A Parent-Produced Prodigy

Jane Austen presents Mr. Woodhouse's parental role in Emma. Emma, motherless, is raised by her father, Mr. Woodhouse, and governess, Mrs. Weston. This particular parenting combination creates specific personality traits in Emma that explains why she tries her luck in matchmaking. This paper will examine the ways in which Emma's personality traits are engendered by the parental influences in her life.
